Pythal Mala
The place is located 65 km from Kannur district and the best time to visit this place is during the cool months of January to April. It is popular as a hill station. Its main attraction is its large variety of flora and fauna and the view of the hills and mountains from this place is enchanting. Other attractions include waterfalls and wildlife. The 300 sprawling acre of land is a safe home to wildlife and numerous birds, butterflies and rare plants. The transport facility is good in this area as you can reach to this place by road, railway or air. The nearest bus station is Kappimala, the nearest railway station is Payyanur railway station or Kannur railway station and the nearest airport is Karipur International airport or Mangalore International airport.
An agricultural village, Kappimala is found in the valley of Paythal Mala which is at a distance of 2 km from it. Variety of crops such as rubber, cocoa, vanilla etc are grown in plenty over here. There is another such agricultural village, Kudiyanmala which is at a distance of 6 km. Government has taken several initiatives to improve tourism in this place out of which a tourist information and counter has been set up in Kudiyanmala.
This place is very safe for people who are new to trekking and for the ones who are looking for an adventurous trip as it may just take about 6 km to reach the top of the hill. While trekking to the top you can enjoy the beauty of flora and fauna and the scenic beauty of the hills and valleys. Once you reach the top one can see the remains of the palace of the tribal king called Vaithalkon. There is a watch tower at this place and you will get a fascinating view from the top of the tower.
The trekkers are advised to go in groups so that you can help each other by sharing some of your load. Tourists are also advised to carry woolen clothes, a pair of good shoes and a strong stick while going for a trek to the hill.
Things to look for at this place:
ST. ANGELO FORT: This fort is built by Portuguese as its name suggests in the year 1505. The place is calm and the climate is pleasant and the tourist police are ever ready and happy to guide you through the tour. You will also get a good view of Kannur from this place.
EZHIMALA: It is a hill reaching a height of 286 meters and is located in Kannur district of Kerala. There is a very famous temple of lord Hanuman and also a Mount Deli Lighthouse located at this place. You can also visit an ancient Mosque at a nearby hill.
RANIPURAM: It is also a hill station which is located in Kasargod district of Kerala. Main feature of this place is trekking trails and varied vegetation. Transport services in the form of jeep are readily available to this place from Panathday which is also linked to Kanhangad by bus services.
